New strategies to address trail bike issues
The Bligh Government is moving to establish localised management strategies about off road motorcycling.
To get the wheels turning, Sport Minister Phil Reeves tabled an Off-Road Motorcycling Management Strategy during Estimates today, which includes the structure of a special task force.
Mr Reeves said due to the sports growing popularity, the Government believes it’s necessary to develop a strategy on how best to manage the use of bikes and their impact on the community.
“This is a whole-of-government response to the recent Crime and Misconduct Commission’s (CMC) report into the effectiveness of police powers in reducing excessive noise from off-road motorcycles,” Mr Reeves said.
“The ‘one size fits all’ approach in the current legislation isn’t working and we need to find a happy medium between riders and the community.
“It’s important that local, state and national governments have a platform from which they can work together to address issues.
“We want Government agencies to work hand-in-hand with local governments to develop specific management strategies in ‘hot spot’ areas.
“Those strategies may include the use of local laws to restrict riding on private property, and the use of joint enforcement teams to deal with nuisance riding.
“The aim is to put the brakes on issues in the first instance, and nip it in the bud.”
