The outdoor recreation industry, in broad terms, consists of all those enterprises that conduct outdoor activities in a non-competitive environment. This includes both volunteer and commercial organisations and encompasses the use of outdoor activities for a variety of purposes including:

In addition, there are a number of stakeholders with an interest in, and an impact upon the outdoor recreation industry and these include government agencies responsible for the management of natural resources (land and water), education and training providers, the tourism industry and conservation organisations.
