CEO's Message

I was pondering during recent media events, how sport is focused on individuals and teams "playing to their strengths". This is indeed a sensible approach and certainly something that we also find in outdoor activities. More broadly however, adventure activities are intentionally aligned with encouraging people to actively and purposefully explore their weaknesses.

When we engage in outdoor, adventure based pursuits we act, and ask others to go, beyond what they think they can do: their comfort levels, their known skills; to a place where they challenge, explore, expand and experience doubt. We ask people to set aside what they think are their boundaries and we take them to physical environments that are unfamiliar or challenging. We ask people to find their inner strengths, we support them to go a little further, to look a little differently, understand from an alternate perspective and realise that they have more resources available to them than are immediately obvious. Some of these resources are within themselves, some are to be found through working with others, some are a reflection of seeing different ways of confronting seeming obstacles.

On June 7, we are hosting two guests who will, in part, be exploring some of these ideas — the challenges, values, outcomes and benefits of people participating in outdoor adventure, education and recreational challenges. One of these guests is Colin Mortlock, author, explorer, philosopher. The other, Norm Hunter, ex Principal of Hillbrook Anglican College — a school established and run with a priority on the values and opportunities to be found in outdoor education.

I encourage all of you who can, to attend this forum and remind yourselves how inspiring the work you do can be, and how valuable a contribution adventure can make to your own and others lives. Mindful practice, embedded in the people and not just the activity, offers a world of difference … and sometimes I think we undervalue that. If we are not clear and work towards our own strengths, benefits and opportunities, it is difficult to convince others of our value.

Live Well
Donna

    Risk Management Workshop Report

On April 9 Clare Dallat and Deb Ajango presented an interesting one-day workshop in Brisbane on Risk Management. Deb is the American author of the excellent Lessons Learned books, which provide in-depth analysis of critical incident cases, and the owner of SafetyEd, an US based organization that provides outdoor Risk Management training and resources. Clare has been Director of Risk Management at the Outdoor Education Group (OEG) since 2002.

The day was very successful with the afternoon involving participants in an extended crisis scenario. The two strongest messages that came through were: 1) that appropriate response and ability to act effectively increases with training, and 2) that planning and preparation are vital. Many thanks go to OEAQ for organising the workshop.
